Commodity Buyers- Packaging, Plastics or Chemicals

Commodity Buyers are responsible for buying the best quality goods for the organization at the most competitive prices. The buyer oversees supply chain management an procurement, possibly on a worldwide scale giving high priority to local content.

Buyer needs to be good at negotiating, dealing with numbers, as well as dealing with other factors such as sustainability, risk management and ethical issues.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts research to ascertain the best products and suppliers in terms of best value, delivery schedules and quality.
  • Evaluates suppliers based on price, quality, and delivery speed
  • Analyzes price proposals, financial reports, and other information to determine reasonable prices
  • Tracks and reports key functional metrics to reduce expenses and improve effectivenes
  • Negotiates contracts and monitors their progress, checking the quality of service provided and closes deals with optimal terms
  • Keeps contract files and using them as reference for the future
  • Forecasts prices and market trends to identify changes of balance in buyer-supplier power
  • Identifies potential suppliers, visiting existing suppliers and new ones, and building and maintaining good relationships with them
  • Evaluates bids and makes recommendations based on commercial and technical factors
  • Determines quantity and timing of deliveries
  • Ensures suppliers are aware of business objectives
  • Attends internal and external meetings

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required. Purchasing and / or Lean Training and experience in a Manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Advanced Degree a plus.
  • Experience in the purchasing of Packaging (printed board, film, sleeves, corrugated), Plastic Components (bottles, caps, pumps) and/or Bulk Chemicals
  • Experience desired in MRP purchasing transactions and software in a manufacturing environment environment, preferably with a consumer products company
  • Analytical ability to independently comprehend inventory levels as affected by various inputs and controls
  • Assertive, effective negotiation and expediting skills.
  • Strong track record of working successfully functionally.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
